Quick Update: Steps 15 Apr 2024

Quick update: Weather was a big factor, but tomorrow we pour some concrete

Corp Update

  • Weather over the past few weeks has been awful. We have had > 9” of rain in the first half of April, making it already the second wettest April on record. Add another 1/2” of rain in the back half of the month, and we’ll be over the top. As a practical matter, this means we lost quite a bit of time outside to the weather.
  • When the weather finally broke, we got to work out front. We have built a small retaining wall to demark the front yard from the public sidewalk. We also formed in the sidewalk, and also dug the trench out back for the 24” deep curb. These are both formed up and passed inspection today. We pour concrete tomorrow.
  • In parallel, I was trying to make some progress on the neighbor’s deck. We ran into a difference of opinion with the structural engineer, but fortunately I have a top-notch architect who agreed with my view. So…. I’m moving forward with my revised plans. In a nutshell, the engineer wanted to cut into the sandstone foundation to hold a beam for the deck. Given the fragility of sandstone, and the possibility that this introduces a new source of water into the basement, I came up with an alternate strategy to build up some brackets that will attach to the bilco doors. This will help us move forward without introducing undue risk to the building.
